Vinyl Siding

Why Vinyl Siding? The facts are clear – today’s vinyl siding, beautifully replicating the clapboard and shingle styles of yesteryear, is being made for a sustainable future. Vinyl siding is now considered to be a “Green” product. Today’s vinyl siding delivers recognized environmental benefits to help make and keep homes green. The strong traditions of the architectural styles and structures of the past are preserved in the siding materials we have today, with technological enhancements that provide long-lasting benefits beyond the aesthetic. The inspiration came from the early craftsmen who designed and built in Dutchlap and Victorian traditions. The innovation came with the ability to develop and produce a highly cost-effective, durable, and aesthetically pleasing siding product.

The result is today’s vinyl siding – the number one exterior cladding choice in the United States and Canada for new construction and remodeling. Vinyl siding is an excellent product offered at a reasonable price, costing about half as much as wood clapboard siding. Best of all, vinyl siding is virtually maintenance-free, requiring only an occasional hosing off to keep it clean.

Fiber Cement

Fiber-cement siding products are not new. They’ve been used in Australia for more than 100 years. About 10 years ago, fiber-cement exterior siding found an exploding market in the United States, and the fiber-cement siding market has been skyrocketing ever since. Fiber-cement siding is a mixture of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber that has been cured with pressurized steam to increase its strength and stability. Fiber-cement siding is resistant to rain, hail, salt air, hurricane force winds, and flying debris. It also resists mold, fungus, and mildew, even in cold climates, not to mention it’s fire and termite resistant. Fiber-cement siding’s most marketable fact, however, is that it will hold a paint job three to four times longer than wood. Most fiber-cement siding comes with a 50-year warranty as an industry standard. D & H Construction has years of experience installing fiber-cement on both residential as well as commercial buildings

Again, more importantly than the product you choose, is the remodeling company you choose. You want to make sure they have experience installing this product. When installed properly, fiber-cement siding will look almost exactly like wood. It is more costly than vinyl siding, but still less expensive than wood siding.

Wood Siding

Wood siding-clapboard, shingles, vertical board-and-batten, and hand-split shakes have been covering homes in this country since the early colonial days. Wood accepts paints and stains extremely well, or it can be left in it’s natural color. However, wood siding does have a drawback: It requires constant maintenance to keep it in top condition. Wood is a porous material that expands and contracts in response to changes in temperature and moisture. Some woods such as cedar and redwood have a natural resistance to rot and decay caused by moisture. Nevertheless, all wood requires a periodic re-coating of paint, stain, or clear sealer on a fairly regular basis to protect it from the elements, especially with our Northeast weather conditions.

Simply put, siding plays a leading role in the appearance of your home. Choosing proper siding is a critical factor in establishing the character of a house. Whether your choice of siding is wood siding, vinyl siding, or fiber-cement siding, D & H Construction has extensive experience with siding homes of every size and shape with all of the varied siding materials out there and can offer solutions for your home.
